Is it difficult? - is it possible? - Change the iPod Mini Batteries yourself

iPod mini Battery Change

All Apple iPods are powered with lithium-ion batteries. They have a limited life span and will probably need to be changed after a couple of years of use. Apple has an exchange program where you can send your iPod in and get a new or refurbished unit in return. Alternatively, you could try changing the battery yourself.

If you have an iPod mini, however, changing the battery is more complicated than with other models of iPods. It can still be done though, so if you are handy with tools and familiar with disassembling electronic gadgets, you can save a lot of money over the $59 that Apple is asking for battery replacement.

The reason why the battery is relatively inaccessible in the iPod mini is to keep the case size is small as possible. Making the battery more accessible would have meant increasing the thickness of the case.

You can buy replacement batteries from a number of retailers, and they often come as kits with the necessary tools needed to open the case of the iPod mini. Just remember though, that when you open up the iPod Mini you are voiding the warranty so never do this if your iPod is still under guarantee.

The iPod mini uses a Sanyo EC003 lithium-ion battery. The life span of lithium-ion batteries can be extended by following certain guidelines. Because of the nature of these batteries, they need to be recharged regularly. Apple recommends recharging them at least once per month -- easy to do if your iPod mini gets lots of use. Another important tip for extending battery life is to keep the unit in temperatures ranging from 32°F to 96°F. Freezing temperatures can shorten the life span of the lithium-ion battery.

If you want to try to change the battery yourself, be sure you get clear instructions on how to open the case. The only tool needed is a small screwdriver with a Philips head on one side and a standard straight ahead on the other side. You will have to pry the end covers off as they are attached with glue. With the end covers off, small screws are exposed which hold the case in place. There are also clips and connections which need to be properly removed to prevent damage to the iPod mini.

Once all the connections have been separated, the iPod Mini simply slides out of the case and the battery is exposed. Simply exchange the battery and reassemble the case.
