Changing the Apple iPod Battery

Despite its popularity, the Apple iPod often is criticized for its inconvenient access to the battery. The case was not designed to be opened, so the only way to “officially” exchange the battery is to send your iPod to Apple for exchange. Apple charges $59 for this service plus shipping charges of $6.95. This is quite a hefty price when you consider the battery itself is only worth about $15.

It is possible to exchange the battery yourself but if you open up the case your warranty becomes void. For those with the standard one-year warranty, however, that is not a concern. The only real concern in this situation is damaging the internal components of the iPod.

Some models (like the iPod nano) are easier to open up than others. The iPod mini, for example, has several attachment devices which must be properly removed before the battery can be exposed. No matter which type of iPod you have, once the case is off it is easy to replace the battery.

Several companies sell battery replacement kits which include a new battery along with the tools needed to open the case. These kits also come with detailed instructions about how to exchange the battery. These kits are available at quite a reasonable price.

All Apple iPods use a lithium-ion battery. This type of battery is the best choice for portable devices because it offers fairly good performance and a reasonable life span. To get the most use out of the battery, Apple offers several suggestions. The battery should be recharged at least once a month. If not, it will lose its ability to hold a charge faster than normal. The battery should also be kept in moderate temperatures. Freezing temperatures and extremely hot and humid conditions can shorten the life of the battery.

Apple also offers several tips for extending the playtime of the iPod. Remember to turn it off when it is not being used. Only use the backlight when necessary. And don't use the EQ if it is not needed as it consumes extra power. Following this advice should give you an average of 14 hours of play time on each charge.
