Sony MZ-NF520D
The Sony MZ-NF520D is a music player that uses MiniDiscs instead of flash memory
or a hard drive to store audio. Each MiniDisc can hold over five hours of music
making them a good choice for a portable music system. They are inexpensive and
widely available making them a good choice for a portable music player.
The Sony MZ-NF520D is powered with a single AA battery which can give up to 48
hours of continuous music playback in LP4 mode. Even in normal stereo mode, the
battery will last for up to 36 hours, making this one of the longest playing
portable audio units on the market today.
Although bit bulkier than a flash based MP3 player, the Sony MZ-NF520D is still
reasonably compact and lightweight. The dimensions are approximately 3 inches
square and 1 1/4 inches thick and it weighs just over 4 ounces without the
battery. It can comfortably fit your pocket or purse.
The Sony MZ-NF520D also has an FM, TV and Weather Band tuner built into it so
you can always keep up-to-date with the latest news and weather information. The
TV tuner is a great idea -- you can listen to your favorite soaps at any time,
maybe even at work!
The Sony MZ-NF520D connect to your computer through a USB 1.1 interface. You can
transfer music to MiniDiscs at up to 32x speed. The enclosed software can be
used to manage your music collection and rip music from CDs and convert it into
different formats. Supported formats include MP3, WMA, WAV and ATRAC3.
The sound quality of the Sony MZ-NF520D is great. It offers a frequency response
from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at just +/- 3dBs. Wow and flutter is almost nonexistent --
standard testing shows it to be unmeasurable.
The Sony MZ-NF520D comes standard with a set of headphones and a remote-control
for tuning radio stations and controlling playback. It also includes Sony's
Sonic Stage software for managing your music collection. Optional accessories
include Active Mini Speakers. The whole package is reasonably priced and
provides a convenient alternative to standard MP3 players.
