Ripping Music with an Audio Grabber
Having your music collection stored on your computer is very convenient. You can
easily browse through titles from different artists, create your own playlists
or even let the audio program choose the music for you. You may already have an
extensive CD collection, so the question is how to get that music on your
computer's hard drive. Well, a little program called an audio grabber will do
just what you require.
Audio grabber software allows you to “rip” the music from any CD. Simply put the
CD into your computer's CD player, start the grabber software and let it copy
the music to your hard drive. If your only experience with copying music has
been in the analog domain (copying to cassette tape) prepare to be amazed with
audio grabbing. Since the music is transferred digitally, the process is very
fast - you can usually copy a complete CD in a couple of minutes.
Another advantage of audio grabber software is the ability to make perfect
digital copies of the original CD. Of course, the resulting wav file is quite
large and it is more efficient to compress the file using MP3 or similar codec.
Compressing files will result in a loss of audio quality, but for most purposes,
MP3 files are suitable for audio storage.
There are many audio grabber programs available. Some are free and some are
commercial software. Almost all of the commercial programs have a free trial
period so you can try them out for a month or so before deciding to buy.
Most audio grabber programs include the ability to convert the audio to MP3, WAV
or OGG format. If you have special conversion requirements, you are sure to find
a program that meets your needs. In addition, most programs feature access to an
online database to retrieve information about the CD you are copying. This makes
it easy to organize your music collection without having to type all the
information yourself.
Some audio grabber programs are a complete package for grabbing audio,
converting it, retrieving database information, and organizing your music
collection. Others are simpler packages with the main purpose of transferring
your CD collection into your computer. If your needs are simple enough, you can
probably find a freeware program that does everything you want. Otherwise,
investing in a commercial audio grabber program might be a good decision.
