Radeon X800XL 256 Mb
If you are looking for a video card that can handle any game on the market you
can't go wrong with the Radeon X800XL 256 Mb. With processing power to spare,
this card offers the same GPU as the Pro version but with one third the clock
speed. Even so this card still offers 16 pipes and can maintain graphic quality
under the most demanding conditions.
This is a PCI express card which runs at about twice the speed as AGP 8X. The
PCI express format guarantees it will be compatible with future game releases
and operating systems. Onboard memory is 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM with a memory bus
width of 256 bits. As we mentioned above, there are 16 pixel pipelines as well
as six vertex pipelines which provide just about the fastest screen redraws
available.
The GPU as well as the RAMDAC speed is a respectable 400 MHz. Maximum screen
resolution is 2048 x 1536 with a refresh rate at 85 Hz. There is a standard VGA
connection as well as DVI, and outputs include S-video, TV out, HDTV, and
composite RCA.
This card runs amazingly cool considering the processing power it packs. Even at
ambient temperatures of 40°C, the X800XL hovers just above that temperature when
idling and rarely goes about 80°C when pushed to the max. Remember, this is a
passively cooled card so these kind of temperatures are quite remarkable.
Because of the passive cooling, there is no fan noise on this card. If you are
looking for high performance and demand silence, the X800XL fits the bill.
It takes up a bit more space than other graphic cards because of the massive
heat sink and heat pipes that are part of the passive cooling system. Be
prepared to allow the space of two PCI for the X800XL.
This is an excellent card for the money and will provide superb performance for
serious gamers.
